Internship Program

Our Internship Program allows candidates the unique opportunity to achieve a valuable work experience in almost any industry across New Zealand. It is designed both for those completing an Internship as part of their study (for which you will receive academic credits), or for those wishing to gain work exposure in their field of interest.

An Internship is an excellent way to gain the skills and experience required to launch your career. All placements are initial un-paid positions, but might turn into employment. They are available at any time of the year and their duration, location and other specifics are left entirely up to you.

Our internship program is structured into two fases:

Unpaid internship

The key purpose of our internship program is to let our Kiwi Youth gain a valuable work experience, skills and / or contacts that may assist to gain employment or work opportunities in the future.

Unless required differently by your University or yourself our internship program offers a 12 week unpaid internship placement for 24 hours per week. While internships can open doors and be an important pathway to success we understand that a full time option is not always preferred.

Our program is designed to:

  • Get you a Work Experience on your CV that makes you stand out from the rest;
  • Develop professional skills, identity and real world experience;
  • Create a network of New Zealand business contacts;
  • Offer a possibility to get hired.

Paid internship

Finalising stage 1 will happen via an evaluation of your 12 weeks within the company. This evaluation will be done by your supervisor and the decision of moving into stage two will be communicated to you via one of our team members here at New Zealand Internships.

We can’t guarantee, but our aim is getting you in stage 2, a paid extension of your internship.

“I decided to look into internships as a Communications student at AUT. I was looking for something that might help me work towards my future career. I was drawn to New Zealand Internships at the beginning because of their range of opportunities. From there, everything was simple and clear. The directions and steps to building a profile were easy to follow and all the information was really helpful. Regardless of being a first year student, NZ Internships was able to find me a nearby part-time placement to do alongside my degree, within the timeframe we set out. The team were always really consistent with communication and were really friendly to work with.”

An internship is a learning experience of its own kind. Below 5 skills you get to learn during an internship.

  • When doing an internship, you learn to work within a team without focusing entirely on yourself;
  • An internship will introduce you to real-life work problems and consequently develops your problem-solving skills;
  • Communicating well on the work floor is a very important skill which you can learn during your internship;
  • An internship will make you more responsible and accountable for decisions you make and how you execute what’s been asked from you.
  • During your study you could just miss a class because you had some personal commitments. During an internship which will be the beginning of your real-work life, you can’t mark your absence that easily and often anymore. An internship will help you learn to manage your time better by maintaining a balance between your work and personal life.

No they are not, we will do our best to find you a placement, but in some areas we rely on weather, experience or availability. So there are no guarantees made.

Expect the placements to be unpaid but we will be in contact with the employers to see if an extension or a potential job offer is possible. Note, do not expect anything else but a work experience and reference as the outcome, anything else is simply just a bonus.

You are considered eligible to apply provided that you are looking for a work experience.

This is a commonly asked question and there are several criteria for this:

  1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the company, is identical to training which would be given in an educational environment;
  2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;
  3. The intern does not replace a regular employee, but volunteers to gain a work experience under close supervision of existing staff;
  4. The company that provides the internship placement has no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern;
  5. The intern is not automatically entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship;
  6. Both, the employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the unpaid internship.
