We are a relatively small company with 10 employees and located in the south of New Zealand. The company does contract design and manufacturing and specialises in potentiostats/galvanostats for clients.
Intern Duties
The assignment will be carried out at the ‘Research and Development’ department, located in the head office.
Potentiostat/galvanostats are electrochemical measurement devices that connect to an electrochemical cell (battery, fuel cell, dropping mercury electrode and many others types of cells/electrodes) and perform measurements, controlled by an embedded pc and/or software running on a pc. These potentiostats/galvanostats basically set a voltage and measure a current (potentiostat) or set a current and measure a voltage (galvanostat). The ranges here are quite high, from 100V to 40A to sub pA with bandwidths as high as 8MHz. The ‘set’ value is kept constant through feedback from the cell through a reference electrode. This loop is always in the analogue domain.
Clients are continuously pushing specifications, so the company is looking to develop a digital potentiostat, i.e. the loop is removed from the analogue domain into the digital domain. This opens up endless possibilities like Z-stat, combined EI-stat and all other sorts of ‘fancy’ feedback algorithms that are very hard to do in the analogue domain.
The project involves:
- Defining limits of the design
- Selecting the appropriate processor
- Designing the firmware/software
- Making a functional prototype
Custom hardware will not be developed yet; therefore an existing potentiostat combined with a DSP development board will be used. The focus of this project is on firmware, fast DSP and feedback algorithms.
